"it's where you sit down that determines everything in life"

going out to meet my friends is like straying beyond my orbit. venturing into a world peopled with childless, rushed and high-heeled. my old life. I ordered a chai tea latte and a piece of raspberry cheesecake and looked around for a vacant chair where I could perch while waiting anxiously for familiar faces to appear. but the place was crowded. I padded my way through the small tables holding my tray, flushed with inexplicable embarrassment.

some days, Starbucks is just like high school cafeteria.

Childless? High heels? Can't relate.

Rushed? Cheesecake? Embarrassment? Can relate.

OH my god, I would NEVER have imagined that YOU--poised, articulate you--would feel this way. I, on the other hand, feel this way often & could relate so so so much to this post. God, when do those feelings just give up and die? Ever?

High-heels? I'm red-headed, and normally quite confident, but donning high-heels makes blood rush to my cheeks. Hardly ever wear them these days, as a SAHM. I'm grateful. Any mother of such handsome twin boys is welcome to sit with me anytime!
Me, I'm partial to the pumpkin muffins. Do they have those at the Paris Starbucks?

Im not sure I remember how to act without the kids in public. I am so used to being with them! LOL.. Hope your evening ended up fun! Our Starbucks is crowded, like shoulder to shoulder crowded all the time is seems. I usually try and sit outside at a table. Inside is to stuffy and very just like you said, high school cafeteria-ish. If I want a blast from my past, I will do inside seating!

I haven't felt completely "myself" since I had kids. Either that or I'm just an entirely new person and never realized it.

aah, i had my first mindblowing experience with this last year when i went to my first college football game since graduating and moving away. all the girls strutting around all primped and ready to go, and i was just lucky to make it out of the house w/o my jammies on still! i just started working again, and i feel akward, gawky, and just plain old socially impaired. you did such a great job translating this feeling into words, as usual!

So true, I feel the same way when I'm out by myself, I feel out of place, like a schleppy looking tired mom, and every one else is so much more cooler.

Every time I sub at the high school I get that lump in the back of my throat. Waiting, just waiting for some popular pretty girl to look down her nose at me.

Hope you found your familiar faces and enjoyed every bite of that cake!
